Summer Book Study Schedule

We're excited about the number of folks who have become followers of this blog and are ready to participate in our Summer Book Study! We also figured that you might like to have some specific details concerning the dates we will be studying each book. We're going to begin with The Daily 5 on July 1st and move into The CAFE Book on July 22nd. We'll wrap up our study of those two books on August 9th. I'm a visual person so created a calendar to help me keep track of everything. You can click the image on the right or this calendar link to download it as a 2-page PDF file. You don't have to participate actively on each day, but these are the dates that we will initiate discussion on each chapter. If you are not able to check in on those dates, just visit this page later and add your comments.

Daily 5 and CAFE Book Giveaway
I loved Katie Klohn's idea of doing a book giveaway, so I'm joining her and giving away one copy of each book to a lucky winner on June 10th. Visit Corkboard Connections to enter the contest. Entering is easy and the only requirements are that you follow this blog and plan to participate in our summer book study. If you win, I'll have the books sent to you next week via Amazon Prime if you live in the US. If you live outside the US, you'll receive the Kindle version instead.

Be sure to check this blog frequently during June. We'll be posting more information here soon. We're looking forward to our book study!

I would love to participate, however your description says it's for the upper elementary grades. I teach second and third graders but we are leveled so they are reading several grade levels ahead. Do you think this group would work for me?

Thanks for posting the schedule! Did you realize that D5-Chap 2 is scheduled on Independence Day? This will not work for me but I can participate in all of the other dates.

Hi Cassandra!
I have a friend/fellow blogger that is doing the same book study for grades 1-3. If you think that would better suit you just email me at rainee2011@gmail.com and I will find you the info. We will be discussing how to use both of these resources in grade 3-7 classrooms so you may want to follow us as well.

This sounds great! I read the Cafe book last summer and did a soft implementation this past school year. It will be very helpful to get more insight and recommedations to further implement in the fall.
Thanks :)

Love, love, love this idea. I am looking for a upper elementary/middle school math book study this summer. (I teach 6 - 8/Alg I math.) Any suggestions... or should we start a new one? :)

I am a first grade teacher. My team and I did a soft implementation of Daily Five this last year. We really want to improve things in the coming year, and are interested in finding anyone doing a Daily Five/Cafe blog book study this summer aimed at younger grades. I did email Fabulous 4th Grade Froggies based on her comment above, but if anyone has any other suggestions, please share - here, or email me at barton1stgrade@gmail.com. Thanks!

I am trying to implement reading workshop in my 4th grade class this year. My grade partner and I will be the only ones in the school doing this. Our principal ordered Units of Study in Reading Workshop by Lucy Calkins to give us a curriculum guide. I really want to do a good job. How do reading workshop and Daily 5 go together? Any helpful suggestions would be great.

I am moving from 2nd to 5th, so I need the perspective of how D5 works in the upper grades.

I can't wait for this to start! It's been awhile since I read both books, so I'm glad to have this as a push to reread them both! Thanks for the calendar, too!

I am also moving to the upper grades next year and would be interested in how to tweak the D5 for older students. The Café Book is on back-order at two of our major bookstore chains! Yikes! I hope I get it in time for the study!

I will be going into my 3rd year of teaching 4th grade. At a recent evaluation, my principal asked me what the areas were that I needed support. I shared my lack of confidence with small group reading instruction. Ironically, she loaned me The Daily 5 and The CAFE Book for the summer. I am so happy (and lucky) to have come across this book study via Pinterest! Great timing! I should also mention this will be the first time I follow a blog. I downloaded the book study schedule, and I'm really looking forward to the many ideas I know I'll gain! Exciting!
